Which is why wiping the trail works for an afternoon and why spraying it works for slightly longer than that. Neither one reaches the queens, the brood, or the several thousand workers currently not on your counter. Kill the visible line and you've removed a fraction of the workforce; the colony replaces it within days and, in some species, responds by splitting and establishing new satellite nests — leaving you with more nests than you started with.
Effective ant control does the opposite of what instinct suggests. It keeps the trail alive, uses it as a delivery route, and lets the ants carry the treatment home.
