If you suspect raccoons, bats, or anything with young. A cornered animal defending a litter in a confined space is how people get hurt.
This is the instinct everyone has, and it's wrong in four separate ways.
It doesn't leave quietly. It tears at the seal, gnaws new openings, and in the case of raccoons and squirrels it frequently comes downward into the living space looking for another way out. Ceilings, walls, and chimneys.
During the breeding seasons — which cover a significant part of the year across the common species — the adult you saw is a mother, and the young cannot follow her out. Sealed in, they die in the void. That produces a serious odour problem, a fly and beetle infestation feeding on the carcasses, and an animal welfare outcome nobody wanted.

A wildlife job during breeding season is not a same-day job. Anyone offering one either hasn't checked for young or isn't planning to tell you what happened to them.

Almost always beneath structures — decks, sheds, porches, and crawlspace access points. The problem is odour, digging, and the fact that a skunk under a deck is very difficult to work around.
Under decks, in crawlspaces, and occasionally in attics. Less destructive than raccoons, but they die in voids fairly readily.

Tell you what applies locally, what the legal path is, and where a timing restriction means waiting rather than acting. If the honest answer is "not until the young have fledged," that's what you'll hear.
Exclusion is the professional method, and it's the opposite of trapping in philosophy: let the animal leave under its own power and make sure it can't come back.
Trapping is used where exclusion won't work — an animal that won't leave, one under a structure with multiple routes, or a situation with an immediate hazard — and it's done to the legal standard for the species and jurisdiction.
The part of the job that people don't budget for, and the part that decides whether the attic is usable afterward.
Raccoons defecate repeatedly in one location, and the accumulation carries a parasite risk that requires specific handling procedures — not a broom and a bin bag.
Accumulated guano can support the growth of an organism whose spores cause respiratory illness when disturbed and inhaled. Large accumulations require containment, protective equipment, and controlled removal.
Don't dry-sweep or vacuum droppings. Disturbance is what puts material into the air. Removal is done damp, with proper protection, and in serious cases under containment.
